What’s Wrong With My Pump?

This is my pump, normally a very reliable and trustworthy pump, a pump that follows instructions and does its job without so much as a murmur or complaint.

Recently however, I noticed that my pump was leaking water. Simple to fix I thought, I’m very experienced at fixing pumps, I’ll do it myself, save us lots of money and the family will be justifiably very proud of my hands-on expertise.

Week 1. attempted to fix. First challenge, had to remove the adjoining manual water outlet to gain access to the inlet attachment to tighten the inlet valve coming from the water tank, so far, so good. 5 minute job max.

Week 2. Unable to reconnect to tank connection and now the RainBank is U/S. Tried priming, force starting. I’ve done it before, it’s a piece of cake. I’ll take it apart and check for blockages.

Week 3. Could not get the 8-10 disassembled impellers, valves and seals back into the pump in the correct order.

Week 4. Pump fittings won’t nest properly, unable to get a seal, pump not working now and RainBank still not working. Thankfully I stopped at this point.

By now you’re getting the idea right? and asking yourself as you read this, why wouldn’t he simply ask someone for help, seek advice, or even, heaven forbid, ask an expert. How did something so simple, turn into a month long, complex and costly problem?

I coach senior business leaders for a living, I coach on problem solving, listening skills, knowing how to ask the right questions. So why didn’t I simply just listen to myself?

The answer I think lies in our inner ego, believing we have all the answers where it would be quicker, more efficient and less costly to simply ask the right question in the first place.

It’s ok not to know all the answers.

Week 5. Plumber on the way.  Cost so far, around $267.

Don’t turn simple into complex, get support, learn to ask the right questions and don’t waste time, money and resources (or water) just ask me!
