What’s This Talk About Purpose Led Organisations?

Purpose versus Performance

There is currently quite a lot of discussion about Purpose-led organisations and their success when this type of culture is prominent.

This is an evolution from Performance-led organisations and a type of thinking popular quite some decades ago, and still current in many companies.

So, what is the difference? Can both cultures exist?

Here is a shorthand guide:

Purpose-Led:
Focuses on creating value for stakeholders and a clear mission, which inspires employees. This is about the “why,” what is our purpose in doing our work, or indeed, existing as a company?

Measurement of success can go beyond just revenue and profit, to other factors such as sustainability and a positive impact on society.

A Harvard Business Review Analytic Services Report showed that leaders who treat purpose as a core driver of strategy and decision-making reported enhanced ability to drive successful innovation and transformational change, thereby achieving consistent revenue growth.

Performance-Driven:
Focuses on accountability, goals, and results. There is also typically a focus on KPI’s and strong measurement of same.

There may be references to ‘high performing teams’ within an overall high-performance culture.

Many companies still focus on this and build employee recognition and reward schemes based on KPI achievements.

What if an organisation combined both?

This could be a Synergy: The best approach combines both: a purpose-driven culture (the ‘why’) which fuels higher, more sustainable performance (the ‘what’).

Thus:

“Purpose without performance lacks impact.
Performance without purpose lacks sustainability.”

The most sophisticated organisations are aligning:

Purpose → Strategy → Metrics → Behavior → Culture

When those are coherent, engagement and results reinforce each other.

Here is a quick Purpose & Performance Diagnostic Survey

A diagnostic to assess alignment between purpose, culture, strategy, and execution.

You can rate your own company, or as a team, or a wider group.
