The appeal of a simple label
There is a reason I Am Surrounded by Idiots has become such a popular leadership and business read. It gives people a simple way to explain the daily mysteries of workplace life.
The urgent decision maker is Red. The storyteller is Yellow. The reliable team member quietly holding the place together is Green. The person checking the spreadsheet, assumptions and version history is Blue.
It is easy to laugh because we can recognise someone. Often, uncomfortably, we can recognise ourselves.
Why the book works
The value of the book is not that it gives us a perfect model of human behaviour. It does not. Its value is that it gives leaders a simple language for an important truth: not everyone thinks, communicates or responds to pressure in the same way.
That insight helps leaders stop assuming a colleague is being difficult, vague, slow, intense or pedantic. They may simply be operating from a different behavioural preference.
Used well, these models create more patience, more humour and more curiosity. That is a useful starting point for leadership.
The connection to DISC
The colour framework in I Am Surrounded by Idiots is closely related to DISC. Broadly, Red aligns with Dominance, Yellow with Influence, Green with Steadiness and Blue with Conscientiousness.
At Stoke Consulting, we see value in DISC-style models when they are used for the right purpose. They are accessible, memorable and practical. They can help teams improve communication quickly, especially under pressure or across different functions. But they are best treated as the doorway, not the whole house.
Where leadership development needs to go deeper
Knowing someone’s preferred communication style is useful. Knowing what happens under pressure is more useful. Understanding the thinking patterns that shape their leadership impact is more useful again.
This is where evidence-based tools such as Human Synergistics LSI provide a deeper platform. DISC-style tools describe preferred behaviour and communication. LSI helps leaders examine the thinking patterns underneath behaviour, including defensive habits, constructive styles, leadership impact and the culture they create.
That distinction matters. A leader can be charismatic, analytical, fast-moving or relationship-focused and still create poor outcomes if their behaviour becomes defensive, controlling, avoidant or approval-seeking.
From self-awareness to leadership impact
The best leaders do not use behavioural models to put people in boxes. They use them to read the room, adapt their communication and choose a more constructive response.
That might mean slowing down to bring others with them, becoming more direct when clarity is needed, knowing when good enough is good enough or stepping forward when the team needs direction.
This is where coaching creates real value. The goal is not to make everyone the same. It is to help leaders understand their default settings, recognise when those settings are helping or hindering and build the flexibility to lead well in different situations.
The Stoke Consulting view
Our view is simple. Books like I Am Surrounded by Idiots are useful because they make behavioural awareness approachable. They help people laugh, reflect and sometimes admit, “Actually, I might be part of the problem here.”
That is a good start. But organisations serious about leadership development need to move beyond labels and into deeper behavioural change.
At Stoke Consulting, our leadership development and coaching work helps leaders build the self-awareness, constructive thinking patterns and practical habits needed to improve performance, trust and culture over time.
So yes, you may be surrounded by Reds, Yellows, Greens and Blues. You may even feel surrounded by idiots on a bad day. But the better leadership question is: what am I doing as a leader to understand people better, adapt more effectively and create the conditions for them to do their best work?
