Too many business coaches arrive with a framework, a whiteboard marker and the unshakeable confidence of someone who has just discovered a two-by-two matrix.
They ask you about your “why”, draw a triangle, mention mindset and leave you with three worksheets you will never open again. That is not coaching.
But here is the interesting bit. A good business coach can be one of the most useful people a business owner ever works with. Not because they have all the answers, they usually don’t. (and if they claim they do, that is a warning sign not a selling point)
A good coach helps you see what you are too close to see. They notice the patterns you have normalised, the meetings that have no effect, the employee you keep making excuses for and the customer you should have walked away from years ago.
Business owners don’t need more theory, they need someone to help them cut through the noise and deal with what’s actually happening day-to-day.
That doesn’t mean models and frameworks are useless, they can be helpful. A good model can simplify complexity and give people a shared language. The problem is when the model becomes the work.
Your business isn’t a case study. It’s not a textbook example. It has personalities, history, bad habits, legacy decisions, cash pressure, family dynamics, tired managers and the occasional employee who has somehow survived years without being held accountable.
That is where pragmatic coaching matters. The best coach is not the one with the biggest methodology, it’s the one who can sit across from you, listen properly, ask the awkward question and help you decide what needs to change next. Sometimes that means strategy or standards. Sometimes it means having the conversation you’ve avoided for six months. Sometimes it means admitting that the problem isn’t the team, the market or the economy, it’s actually you.
That is uncomfortable. It’s also useful.
The right coach doesn’t replace your judgement or run your business. They help you lead it better by helping you make decisions, follow through and stop tolerating the things that are dragging the business down.
