Want To Be Seen As An Effective Leader? Stop Saying This..

Leadership Development Stoke Consulting

Speak Up. Stand Tall. Or Step Aside.

At some point in every leadership journey, you have to make a call.

Will you speak clearly, lead with intent, and use the seat you’ve earned, or keep holding back?

This isn’t about being loud or having all the answers. It’s about stepping fully into the role you’ve taken on. When leaders hesitate, teams drift. When leaders hold back, people fill in the gaps. And, when leaders don’t lead, someone else always will.

If you’re not ready to do the job just yet, that’s okay, but it is time to either fully claim your leadership role or get the help you need. You owe clarity to your team.

1. Stop Softening What Needs to Be Said

How often do you hear:

“Just a thought…”
“I might be wrong, but…”
“What do you think about maybe trying…”

That’s qualifying language. It might sound respectful or thoughtful, but it usually signals doubt and insecurity and your team can hear it.

If you’re leading others, you owe them directness, strength and clarity. Not perfect answers, but clear intent.

Try this shift:

  • From: “I could be wrong, but…”
  • To: “Here’s what I recommend, and why.”

You’re not being arrogant. You’re claiming your role as a leader.

2. Leadership Means Taking a Position

You don’t have to control the room, but you do have to offer a direction.

Saying, “There are lots of options,” is fine in a brainstorming session. Saying it in a crunch-time decision-making moment? Not so helpful.

Instead, try:

“Based on what we know, I think Option A is the best call. Here’s my thinking. Let’s pressure test it.”

It shows you’re thinking, not avoiding. It also sets the tone for action. If your voice isn’t leading the room, someone else’s will and it might not be the right one.

3. Cut the Qualifiers — They Shrink Your Leadership Presence

Catch yourself saying things like:

“This might sound silly…”
“Sorry, just to add one more thing…”
“I’m not sure, but…”

That’s your self-doubt talking and it teaches your team to doubt you too.

Your job is to make it easier for people to follow you, not harder. When you sound unsure, people hesitate.

You don’t need to fake confidence, but don’t hand it over so easily either.

4. If You’re Not Leading, Start Now, Or Get Support.

This isn’t about shame or criticism. It’s about standards.

Leadership is a responsibility, not just a title or a pay grade. If you’re in the seat, your job is to use it. If you’re not ready yet, that’s okay, but it means you’ve got work to do.

Here’s the real choice:

  • Step up and start leading. Use your voice. Make the call. Own the room when it counts.
  • Or get support to get there. Coaching can help, it’s how most leaders get better.

Stoke Consulting works with leaders every day to help them claim their space and lead with purpose.

5. Try This: Your Leadership Language Detox

For the next week, listen closely to your own language in meetings, emails, and conversations. Then try these swaps:

  • Instead of: “This might sound silly, but…”
Try: “Here’s a bold idea I want to test.”
  • Instead of: “I’m not sure what the group thinks, but…”
Try: “I recommend we go with X — thoughts?”
  • Instead of: “Sorry, I just want to add…”
    Try: “One point to consider.”

Each time you choose clear, intentional language, you reinforce your credibility and leadership presence.

Final Word: You Don’t Need to Have All the Answers. But You Do Need to Show Up.

Leadership isn’t about being bulletproof. It’s about being willing to take responsibility when it’s uncomfortable and being clear when others are uncertain. It is about modelling the kind of courage and intent that makes people want to follow.

If you’re ready for that, start now.

If you’re not ready yet, get the support you need, or be fair to those around you and step aside until you are.

At Stoke Consulting, we help leaders build clarity, confidence and a high-impact way of working that creates real momentum, for their people and for themselves. Whether you’re stepping into your first senior role or recalibrating after years in the game, we’re here to help you to become a calm, confident and resilient leader.

Your team doesn’t need more hesitation, they need a leader.
